Physics II 2016/2017
In the lectures and the exercises the student will be introduced into the main principles of electromagnetism and in the basic concepts of quantum mechanics. They include:
Electric charges, the electric field, Gauss law and its applications, electric potential, electrical properties of materials, Ohm’s law: a microscopic view, capacitance, electric current, resistance, the magnetic field, the magnetic force on a moving charge, magnetic force on a current carrying wire, the magnetic field due to a moving charge, Ampere’s law, faraday’s law of induction, Lenz’ law, inductance, magnetic properties of materials, Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic waves, energy transport, the electromagnetic spectrum, the photon concept, particles as waves: the de Broglie relation, the Schrödinger equation, the free particle, quantum well and tunnel effect, the Fermi gas, origin of bandsin metals.
Each topic goes with an exercise which will be solved as an example. Additionally, the student receives additional example problems for home-studies.
Learning Outcomes:
Learning the basic elements of Electromagnetism and basic quantum mechanics, including introduction into fundamental physical principles and their application
Giving students an understanding of the basic problems and concepts in electromagnetism and basic quantum mechanics and developing the competence to analyze and solve simple problems in these fields.
Getting the competence to apply the principles of electromagnetism and basic quantum mechanics.
