Optimization And Statistical Mechanics 2024/2025
Generali:
- Dipartimento: Scienze Matematiche, Fisiche E Naturali
- Settore Ministeriale: FIS/02
- Codice di verbalizzazione: 8067176
- Metodi di insegnamento: Frontale E Altro
- Metodi di valutazione: Orale
- Prerequisiti: General knowledge: classical physics, mathematical analysis, algebra and geometry. Specific knowledge: statistical mechanics, probability calculus, computational physics.
- Obiettivi: LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course aims to provide advanced knowledge of modern statistical mechanics, with particular attention to constrained optimization, critical phenomena, complex networks theory and stochastic processes. The course also aims to develop research skills in the above-mentioned areas, from both a theoretical and computational point of view, through the development of individual projects (also on interdisciplinary topics) which involve the creation of models and simulations and the analysis of large databases. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Students will have to acquire knowledge of the different analytical, computational and statistical tools that will be illustrated in the course, and to understand how to use them depending on the peculiarities of the problems addressed. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Students must be able to apply some of the methods and techniques described in class to solve problems on general topics relating to complex systems. Through the implementation of their project, students will become familiar with the planning and execution of the various phases of a research activity. MAKING JUDGMENTS: Students will acquire the ability to abstract and identify the fundamental ingredients of a complex problem, integrate the knowledge that can be acquired on the problem from the various types of analysis (analytical, numerical, statistical), and learn to formulate conclusions on the basis of limited or approximate information. Furthermore, they must be able to carry out bibliographic searches, select the appropriate analysis techniques, develop complex algorithms independently and evaluate the correctness of the results obtained. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Students must be able to effectively present a research project: formulate the questions properly, describe the issues and the state of the art, the methods used, the results and implications of their analyzes in a convincing and unambiguous way. LEARNING ABILITY: Students will gain an understanding of the advanced statistical mechanics methods used in physics research, and how these are applicable to many fields other than physics itself. They should be able to read and understand scientific publications, analytical derivations, code manuals, data specifications.
