Generali:
- Dipartimento: Scienze Matematiche, Fisiche E Naturali
- Settore Ministeriale: CHIM/08
- Codice di verbalizzazione: 8067418
- Metodi di insegnamento: Frontale
- Metodi di valutazione: Scritto E Orale
- Prerequisiti: In order to learn better from the course in question, it is - Necessary: full knowledge and mastery of notions of Physiology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry. - Relevant: basic knowledge of Pathology, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, Toxicology. - Useful: basics of Drugs Analysis, Anatomy.
- Obiettivi: LEARNING OUTCOMES: The main aim of the course is to provide the molecular rationale behind the drugs currently in clinical use by focusing on structure-activity relationships. The student will know the classes of the drugs described in the course with particular reference to their structures, the drug discovery process, structure-activity relationships, molecular modification leading to modification of duration of action and administration route, molecular mechanism of action, binding mode and metabolism. The classes of the drugs will be antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents i.e. sulphonamides and quinolones, antiviral agents, as well as an example of gastrointestinal class of drug. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The students will know the various classes of drugs described in the light of structure-activity relationships and will be able to understand all aspects about drug classes reported in the program. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: At the end of the course the student, applying the acquired knowledge, will be able to identify a drug placing it in a specific therapeutic class described during the course, to evaluate the structural modification useful to improve (or decrease) the activity, modulate the absorption, and the lifetime. The student will be able to recognize the key feature joining chemical structure and bioactivity and to apply his/her knowledge to hypothesize the binding mode of a specific drug with its receptor. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: The making judgements will be assessed by inviting the student to formulate personal considerations on specific case studies. At the end of the course the student will be able to evaluate the appropriate choice of a drug based on its structure. This critical and judgement ability, will be obtained thanks to continuous interactivity hold during the course. Indeed, the teacher will ask questions very frequently to stimulate students to link the actual topics to all the topics studied up to that time, so that the study will not be isolated, but integrated matter with the acquired knowledge. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Students are expected to speak clearly and fluently in English (level B2) with an appropriate technical language, to have a good level in presentation, as well as active listening, to give appropriate feedback during the oral exam about all the program topics. The communications ability of the student about the matter will be evaluated. LEARNING SKILLS: The student will find details of lessons on the suggested textbooks, in the scientific literature and in the furnished slides and will have ability to use them to pursue an independent preparation. This will be useful to the student to find again topics of the matter also in future time when the memory of the concepts described in the lesson room will be softer. The textbooks will remain the benchmark for student that will be able to find again details of forgotten notions.
