  • Obiettivi: LEARNING OUTCOMES: Knowledge of the main aspects of Environmental Geotechnics, of specific analysis criteria and methods for solving the corresponding geotechnical problems. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: At the end of the course, the student will be able to identfy and classify soils and rocks, to develope seepage flow analysis, to estimate the bearing capacity of shallow foundations, to develope the preliminary geotechnical design of earth retaining structures, to evaluate the safety margins of the foundation of fluvial bridges, to estimate the kinematic characters of debris flows. The lessons of Geotechnical Engineering will provide the basic methods for the analysis and the design of geotechnical simple systems, also with reference to the code standards. The student will apply the acquired knowledge to attend successive, advanced courses of Geotechnical Engineering. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: At the end of the course, the students will be able to carry out advanced safety analyses of earth structures (embankement dams, levees, natural and artificial slopes) as well as to design the most relevant stabilization measures. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: The student judgement is developed with the help of exercises, individual and/or in-group, and, above all through the design projects, assigned during the year, that require an individual study and a comparison with the other colleagues. The student, at the end of the class, shall be able to develop a critical check examination of the correct application of the acquired knowledge to the structural design. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The student, both during the interviews with the teacher during the year, and at the end of the class, during the oral examination, shall be able to highlight correctly the practical acquired expertise, with suitable technical terminology. LEARNING SKILLS: The student shall be able to face easily the study of more complex aspects related to natural or handmade soils, by attending advanced geotechnical lessons in successive courses and/or in at professional level.
