Polish theatre from Mickiewicz to Grotowski
The course will analyse the stages of theatre development in Poland, from the Great Reform of the Theatre to the mid-20th century, in the European context.
It will start from the mid-19th century with an excursus analysing the crisis of 19th-century theatrical languages and the work of Adam Mickiewicz (1843), the father of the first great Polish theatrical reform, to the theoretical writings on theatre by D'Annunzio and LeÅmian, the staging of WyspiaÅski's /Hamlet/, the theatre of Stanislavskij and Artaud, and Grotowski's so-called "Poor Theatre". Particular attention will be given to the discussion of the role of the spectator, the actor and the director, highlighting a paradigm shift common to the great reformers of Polish and European theatre. The course does not require prior knowledge of either Polish language or literature.
