Programme: 

FROM EXCAVATIONS TO COLLECTING OF ANTIQUES THROUGH THE MIDDLE AGES AND BAROQUE

It will be considered the antiquarians method  in investigating and understanding the material remains of the past before Archeology was defined as a modern historical science. The course will deal with some aspects of  the rediscovery and reception of Classical Antiquity from Middle Ages to Baroque in Western culture.

The main themes which will be developed are:

- antiquarian searches and humanist scholars  that promoted the knowledge of the archaeological remains with their work;

- collecting of antiques in Italy , with particular reference to Rome;

- excavations of important monuments and archaeological sites.

PREREQUISITES 

Basic knowledge about Archaeology, Greek and Roman Art History, Medieval and Modern Art History.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Consistent with the learning outcomes of the providing Degree Course (Cultural Heritage) foreseen by the SUA-CdS form (sections A.4.b.2, A.4.c), the  aim of this course is to allow students to understand the relationship between Antiquity and Modernity and  the method in investigating the material remains of the past from the antiquarian view  to the modern Archaeology.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

At the end of the course, the student has got  a solid knowledge of the topics and has learned methods, tools and documentation to understand the history of some important archaeological sites in Rome and Latium and the processes of formation of the antiquity heritage of the most important  Italian and foreign museums.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNADERSTANDING

It is expected that the student will be able to use different documentary sources (archaeological, historical, archival) and a reference bibliography in relation to the history, evaluation and preservationof the cultural good.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS

The skills acquired  will allow to orient with autonomous capacity in study and research and to make judgments  critically on specific problems.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Use of technical terminology appopriate to the topics both in the oral presentation and in the exam.

LEARNING SKILLS:

Ability to deal the study of  the history of antiques and archaeological areas.

LEARNING VERIFICATION CRITERIA

Oral exam consisting of an interview lasting about 30 minutes on the topics of the programme. Evaluation criteria: the knowledge of the topics included in the course, the quality of the speaking ability and the talent to develop arguments  and to apply the tools assimilated during the lessons.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCEDURES AND TEACHING METHODS ADOPTED

The lecture lessons are presented and developed with Power Point Presentations. Along with general topics, particulars themes are analyzed in order to create debate and group consideratios. Attention is given to topics that promote interdisciplinarity.

The lessons will be integrated with visits to places of archaeological and historical-artistic interest and with conferences and seminars.
