Il programma prevede un approfondimento e un consolidamento delle nozioni fondamentali della traduzione, quali l'equivalenza a livello di parola (lessico, terminologia, corpora, uso dei dizionari), l'equivalenza sopra il livello di parola (collocazione, registro, idiomi, culture-specific concepts), e l'equivalenza grammaticale, sintattica, tematica e pragmatica (coesione e coerenza testuale; reader/text oriented translations, genere).

Lo studio e la pratica di tali aspetti verranno affiancati dalla lettura di alcuni testi teorici specifici che invitano a riflessioni su come questa disciplina viene interpretata dalle diverse correnti di pensiero traduttologico e, in modo particolare,  sui processi traduttivi.

Obiettivi:

L’impostazione del corso mira a sviluppare le tecniche traduttive e a consolidare le competenze interpretative ed espressive che permettono una resa adeguata del testo di partenza. L’esame finale prevede la stesura e la presentazione da parte degli studenti di un lavoro individuale (traduzione in italiano o in inglese con  analisi testuale e traduttologica di un testo a scelta). L’esame orale si svolge in lingua inglese e verte sulla discussione degli aspetti salienti del lavoro svolto dallo studente.)

Course description

The course sets out to develop translation skills and techniques and to consolidate awareness of fundamental translation concepts like equivalence at word level (lexical, terminological, corpora and dictionary use); equivalence above word level (collocation, register, idiom, culture-specific concepts), and at the level of grammatical, syntactic, thematic and pragmatic equivalence (textual cohesion and coherence; reader/text-oriented translations, and text-types).

For the written exam students are required  to produce an Italian translation of an English text of their own choice (with textual and theoretical analysis and commentary of their work). The oral exam is in English and involves the discussion of salient theoretic and practical  aspects of the student’s written translation project.

Aim

The course is an introduction to the theory and practice of translation from English into Italian; it also introduces students to the translation of selected text types into English. The exam consists of a written translation of a text into Italian or English chosen by the student and accompanied by textual and theoretical analysis of it.

Together with the study and practical application of these concepts, students will be required to read certain specific texts on translation theory that will encourage them to consider how this discipline is interpreted by the different schools of translation theory, especially as regards the literary and cultural aspects of the translation process.
