- Prerequisiti: The course aims to present the overall transformations that the city of Rome underwent between the end of the ancient world and the early Middle Ages, and its subsequent developments during the high and late Middle Ages. In particular, the urban history of Rome will be explored in depth, viewed through the lens of archaeology, thanks also to the vast amount of new data that has emerged over the past thirty years from stratigraphic archaeological investigations carried out in various areas of Rome. At the same time, the course will illustrate the main buildings and monuments of the medieval Rome.
- Obiettivi: LEARNING OUTCOMES: Provide the student with the essential elements and main aquisition of Italian and European medieval archaeology with reference to the development of the city of Rome and its monuments during the Middle Ages. Learn to understand the significance and value of post-antique monuments and urban landscapes. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Knowledge and understanding of the transformations of the Roman urban reality (buildings, infrastructure, and landscapes) in the post-classical era. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The aim is to set the foundations for the acquisition of key skills for a correct chronological and cultural assessment of the archaeological and monumental heritage of medieval Rome, also considering the possible planning of historical-archaeological themed tours. MAKING JUDGMENT: The goal is to stimulate critical abilities through the analysis and comparison of archeolgical sites of various natures and chronologies. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: During or at the end of the course students are required to critically present and comment on a site that is part of the monumental heritage of medieval Rome. This aims to create a participatory teaching approach, enabling the acquisition of specific terminology related to historical-archaeological research. LEARNING SKILLS: Lectures, text discussions, guided tours of museums and monuments are aimed at learning to understand and communicate the potential of post-classical Roman monumental heritage.
