  • Obiettivi: The course is composed of two parts: part A- Topics in English Semantics: theoretical trends and practical applications and part B-Critical Discourse Analysis: theoretical premises and practical applications. In part A, the course studies some topics in English semantics: componential analysis, semantic relations, compounding, idiomaticity, gender etc. The course pays specific attention to the question of figurative language, with particular emphasis on problems concerning metaphor and the cross-cultural/cross-linguistic differences between English and Italian. The lectures include empirical and textual analyses and applications related to the translation and translatability of the figurative level of language. The course also aims at an in-depth knowledge and appropriate use of vocabulary. Assignments include reading of contemprary texts (novels, newspapers internet texts etc.) In part B, The course studies the methodological tools of discourse analysis and of conversation analysis useful for the interpretation of English discourse. The lectures include empirical and textual analyses and reflections on problems of translation and translatability related to the ideological sign in different text-types. The course also aims at an in-depth knowledge and appropriate use of vocabulary. Assignments include reading of contemporary texts (novels, newspapers, internet texts etc.)
