  • Prerequisiti: For an effective comprehension of the course contents the student is expected to know the basic principles of microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, and general pathology. During the lectures, the teacher will always provide the student with enough background information to frame the topic. Students should also possess a good knowledge of written and spoken English (B2 level).
  • Obiettivi: The course aims at providing the student with the fundamental knowledge of the principles of antimicrobial and anticancer treatment (including monoclonal antibodies and small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors), in order to correctly identify and classify the type of drugs dispensed in territorial pharmacies and hospitals or still undergoing evaluation in clinical trials. Special emphasis will be given to pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, drug interactions, therapeutic uses and to biotech drugs with innovative mechanisms of action. An important aim is also to provide the skills for the appropriate use of antibiotics in light of the increase in drug-resistance phenomena concerning hospital-acquired infections and the current lack of effective antibiotics for serious infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. The course also aims at acquiring the basis and instruments to understand the relationship between the genetic inter-individual variability respect to drug response variability, both in terms of efficacy and toxicity. Students will learn the main examples already implemented in clinical practice of pharmacogenomics biomarkers, evaluating their clinical validity and clinical utility and related regulatory issues. Another aim will to understand the role of pharmacogenetics in the development of new drugs.
