- Obiettivi: The course introduces the description and the design technologies for electromagnetic sensing and telemetry equipments involving body-centric systems in a real environment. In particular, the course addresses the intentional and un-intentional interactions between radiofrequency sources and transmitters/receivers and the human body for both data gathering and healthcare applications. Moreover, the course is mostly laboratory-oriented and offers the students the opportunity to be involved in a realistic design project concerning a wireless system for electromagnetic sensing application. The project begins with a critical review of the proposed requirements and the planning of the activity by means of industrial standard methodologies (Work Package Breakdown, Gantt diagram). Then a program manager and task leaders are identified. The design activity is based onto the use of Industrial electromagnetic CADs, and will lead to the fabrication and experimentations of prototypes by means of fast manufacturing and measuring facilities. Past projects addressed the design of a WIFI extender system, a Sensor Network for Internet of Things, a Telemetry System for communication with body-implanted devices. Topics: 1. RADIO-PROPAGATION INTO HUMAN TISSUES Electromagnetic features of the human body; Complex Permittivity, Specific Absorption Rate, Bio-heat Equation. 2. RADIO SYSTEMS FOR HUMAN HEALTHCARE Inductive, Capacitive and Radiofrequency sensors and applicators. 3. AUTOMATIC MODELING AND DESIGN OF RADIO-SENSORS Computer modeling and Design by the Finite Difference Time-Domain Method The Genetic Algorithm Optimization 4. ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERACTIONS AMONG RADIATING SYSTEMS Coupling among antennas and sensors, pattern distortion, impedance mismatching; Radiated Emission and Susceptivity; ElectroStatic Discharge; Shielding. Emission regulations. 5. PROJECT MANAGEMENT Elements of project management: Roles, Work Package Breakdown, GANTT diagrams, Deliverables, Milestones. State of the art analysis; Preliminary Design Tradeoff; Detailed Design and Sensitivity Analysis; Fabrication of prototypes by fast manufacturing equipments and laboratory tests; Final Documentation and Presentation. Exam modality - project report and presentation - oral interview
