William Addis
Bill ADDIS
Roma Tor Vergata University Visiting Professor (September 2015 - January 2016)
Bill studied engineering at Cambridge and began working as a design engineer with Rolls Royce Aeroengines. He later joined the Department of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading concentrating on engineering materials and the design of building structures. There he undertook research towards a PhD in the history and philosophy of structural engineering design. He left Reading in 1999 to join Buro Happold Consulting Engineers where he now focuses on environmentally-responsible and sustainable design of buildings and masterplans. During his time as an academic, Bill concentrated on helping architects to understand how they could most benefit from what engineers have to offer in the design process. It is equally important for architects to ask the right questions as well as for engineers to understand what architects most need from engineers.
Bill has written many books and papers on diverse aspects of structural engineering including design, philosophy, aesthetics, pedagogy, history and sustainability. For nearly four decades Bill has studied the history of building and civil engineering and construction.
He has written books and papers on many aspects of the subject. A full bibliography is available here: http://www.tulliaiori.com/SIXXI/boardCV/Addis%20Biblio%20crono.pdf
He is a co-editor of Construction History, the journal of the Construction History Society. He is also chair of the Editorial Advisory Panel for the Engineering History and Heritage volume of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
