Giuseppe Vairo is Full Professor (since 2021) in the scientific disciplinary sector 08/CEAR-06/A (formerly ICAR/08, Mechanics of Solids and Structures - "Scienza delle Costruzioni") and is affiliated with the Department of Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata." He earned his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and graduated with honors in Mechanical Engineering at the same institution. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications, some of which have received international and national awards.
His research focuses on the following topics:
- Mechanics of Materials and Structures (mechanics of long-span bridges and aeroelastic behaviour; modelling of wind loads on structures; mechanics of elastic cables and stays for structural applications; mechanics of tensegritiy structures; mechanics of thin-walled structural elements: plates, shells and beams; unilateral contact mechanics; unilateral problems in constitutive modelling; mechanics of composite materials and structures; smart materials -shape memory alloys, piezoelectric materials- for smart structural applications; mechanics of nano/microstructured materials; energy harvesting from vibrating structures; structural design and optimization; structural problems in fusion nuclear reactors; structural response of wind turbines)
- Biomechanics of Tissues and Biological Systems (soft tissues: constitutive modelling, modelling of tissue damage and remodelling, nano-micro-macro multiscale approaches, tissue multiscale mechanobiology; bone tissues: mutiscale interfaces in bone, costitutive multiscale modelling, risk assessment of femur bone fracture and cancer influence on mechanical performance; dental system: periodontal ligament modelling, mechanics of restorative treatments, modelling and design of osteointegrated dental implants, bone-implants load transfer mechanisms; stenting biomechanics: mechanics of traditional and drug eluting stents, transport-reactive pharmacokinetics modelling in arterial tissues, stent-wall interaction; bioprinting: advanced theoretical and computational modelling)
- Applied Mathematics and Numerical Methods (multiscale approaches, submodeling techniques, homogenization methods; variational methods for structural applications; convex analysis in Mechanics; advanced finite-element and finite-volume formulations for fluid and structural problems; molecular-dynamics appraches for nano-strucutured materials)
