Profile

Alessandra D’Epifanio is Full professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemical Science and Technology, at the University of Roma “Tor Vergata”. She received her Laurea in Chemistry from the University of Rome, La Sapienza and her PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. She teaches several classes (at post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate level) on Inorganic Chemistry and Solid State Ionics to engineering students. She is Member of the Teaching Supervising Committee of the International Ph.D. Program in Materials for Health, Environment and Energy.

The scientific activity of ADE is focused on the study of innovative materials for energy production and sustainable development.

In 2011, she has been awarded by The American Ceramic Society ACerS Ross Coffin Purdy for the best paper on ceramics published in 2010: “High proton conduction in grain-boundary-free yttrium-doped barium zirconate films grown by pulsed laser deposition”, published in Nature Materials.

She co-authored more than 130  papers on International Journals and over 90 scientific contributions at international conferences, meetings and schools. Her papers have been cited over 6200 times and her h-index is 41. Active member of a number of professional societies, such as the Electrochemical Society (ECS), Materials Research Society (MRS), Interuniversity Consortium on Materials Science and Technology (INSTM), Italian Chemical Society (SCI) and Italian Association of Chemistry for Engineering (AICIng). She actively participated to numerous research projects financed by MIUR, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, The Ministry for Environment and the European Union.

Research activity

The research activity of ADE is focused on the study of innovative materials for energy production and sustainable development. It can be summarized mainly on three topics:

i) Development of innovative synthetic procedures for the preparation of nanostructured materials to be used in several fields such as chemical sensors, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), polymeric fuel cells (PEMs), Redox Flow Battery (RFB), Bio-electrochemical system (BES), lithium ion batteries, fourth generation photovoltaics, and biomaterials.

ii) Structural and morphological characterization of materials by thermal analysis (TG, DSC), X-ray diffraction, SEM (scanning electron microscopy).

iii) electrochemical characterization of the materials and construction of the devices in lab and large scale.
